Guide overview Beyond Individual Prompts

Lesson 12 of 14

What Is an AI Workflow?

One great prompt solves one task. A workflow is what you get when you chain several prompts — often with a few manual steps mixed in — into a sequence built for something you'll do again and again, not a one-off.

Take writing a piece of content. As a single prompt, that might be "write a blog post about X." As a workflow, the same task could look more like this:

  1. Generate 5 possible angles or headlines for the topic.
  2. Pick the strongest one and generate a short outline.
  3. Expand the outline into a full first draft.
  4. Ask AI to review the draft for clarity and tighten weak sections.
  5. Repurpose the finished piece into a shorter social post.

Every step is still just a prompt. But because the sequence is already decided, you're not reinventing the process each time you need content — you just run it. And the quality stops depending on how much thought you happened to have that particular morning.

That's really the shift from "using AI" to "having a system for using AI." One clever prompt helps once. A workflow helps every time you hit that same kind of task — and that's where the time savings actually add up.
