Lesson 3 of 14

What Is a Prompt?

A prompt is just the message you send an AI tool — whatever instruction, question, or request starts (or continues) the conversation. That's really the whole definition. No special syntax, no secret command language to learn.

Prompting turns out to be a real skill, but not because of some trick or format. It's the same skill as giving clear instructions to a new hire — someone smart and capable, who just doesn't know your business, your goals, or what "good" looks like to you, unless you tell them.

Picture how differently a new employee would respond to these two instructions:

Vague instruction

“Go write something for the newsletter.”

Clear instruction

“Write a 150-word newsletter intro announcing our new pricing, aimed at existing customers, friendly but professional tone, ending with a link to the pricing page.”

Here's the thing: a new hire would come back with two completely different pieces of work from those two instructions. So does AI. Almost every gap between a weak prompt and a strong one comes down to clarity, not to any limit on what the AI can do.

The next few lessons build on this one piece at a time: how AI actually reacts to what you write, weak and strong prompts side by side on a real task, and then a method you can reuse for writing better ones.
